I just returned from “vacation” in California. While there, I had the opportunity to preach in my home church. Likewise, whenever I get together with my dad, I can always expect a rather lively theological debat. However, this past trip proved to be rather frustrating at best, worrisome as normalcy. Here’s a few points that stood out to me:
Women’s Ordination
The problem with this issue is that most everyone prefers one thing and the Bible says something completely different – well, maybe not completely different…but different enough to cause problems. Obviously, I cannot speak for everyone, but I know how I feel.
I believe firmly that women are just as capable as men to do everything and anything men do. I do not believe the Bible in any way, shape, or form degrades women or thier abilities outside of conveying ideas that were common at the time of its writing. However, I also believe that God has clearly laid out an authority structure that He intends His Church to follow. There is a conflict of interest going on in which we must deal with our preferences versus God’s instructions. To me, the Bible seems pretty clear and simple…what’s wrong with the simplest explanation?
Multiple Interpretations
I’ll applaud any attempt by any organization to be as all-inclusive, non-descriminatory as possible. However, what I find ridiculous is when an organization begins to enact certain policies that contradict others. The specific policy I have in mind is that of recognizing “multiple legitimate interpretations.” That sounds like an open door to heresy. But if not, it still creates an environment in which the basic principles an organization – those that provide identity – no longer do their job. All of a sudden, everyone has their own interpretation and everyone is accusing the other of heresy based on their interpretation. The CRC is setting itself for a major theological headache in the future…
